Which iPhone should you buy in India right now?
The iPhone 17 is the one to buy, and stores have had it for up to ₹19,910 below Apple's price. Here's when the 17e, the 16 or an older 17 Pro wins.

The Synap verdict
Buy the iPhone 17: a 120Hz screen, two 48MP cameras and 256GB, often for less than Apple's ₹99,900 in stores.
Buy it if
You want the best iPhone for the money, or it costs ₹15,000 or less over the iPhone 17e where you shop
Skip it if
You need 4x zoom (get a discounted iPhone 17 Pro) or your budget stops at ₹70,000 (get the iPhone 16 from a store)
Buy the iPhone 17. At ₹99,900 for 256GB on Apple’s India store, it’s the iPhone that asks you to give up the least for the money: a 120Hz screen, two 48MP cameras and 256GB as standard. And during the festive sales you may not have to pay ₹99,900 for it. When I checked on 12 October, one big electronics store had it at ₹79,990.
Everything else in Apple’s line-up is a trade. You get less phone for less money, or more camera, more screen or a thinner body for a lot more. Below is which trade makes sense for whom, plus two questions climbing fast in Google searches from India this month: whether last year’s iPhone 17 Pro is now a bargain, and whether the iPhone 16 is still worth buying.
| iPhone | Apple’s price | In stores, 12 Oct | Screen | Rear cameras | Battery (Apple’s claim) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | ₹79,900 | ₹64,900 to ₹79,900 | 6.1-inch, 60Hz | One 48MP | 26 hours |
| iPhone 16 (128GB) | ₹89,900 | ₹69,900 | 6.1-inch, 60Hz | 48MP + 12MP ultrawide | 22 hours |
| iPhone 17 | ₹99,900 | ₹79,990 to ₹99,900 | 6.3-inch, 120Hz | 48MP + 48MP ultrawide | 30 hours |
| iPhone 17 Pro | No longer sold by Apple | ₹1,25,990 to ₹1,30,490 | 6.3-inch, 120Hz | Three 48MP, 4x zoom | 31 hours |
| iPhone Air | ₹1,49,900 | ₹1,49,900 | 6.5-inch, 120Hz | One 48MP | 27 hours |
| iPhone 18 Pro | ₹1,64,900 | ₹1,64,900 | 6.3-inch, 120Hz | Three 48MP, 4x zoom | 34 hours |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | ₹1,79,900 | ₹1,79,900 | 6.9-inch, 120Hz | Three 48MP, 4x zoom | 43 hours |
| iPhone Duo | ₹2,99,900 | On sale from 23 Oct | 7.6-inch folding, 5.4-inch outer | 48MP + 48MP ultrawide | 31 hours (inner screen) |
Which iPhone is best for most people?
The iPhone 17, at ₹99,900 for 256GB. It has the same 6.3-inch 120Hz screen and 3,000-nit peak brightness as the ₹1,64,900 iPhone 18 Pro, two 48MP cameras (main and ultrawide), and Apple claims 30 hours of video playback. It’s the cheapest iPhone that doesn’t make you give up anything you’ll notice every day.
What you don’t get is a telephoto camera, so anything past 2x zoom is a crop. The A19 chip isn’t the Pro version, and the USB-C port runs at old USB 2 speeds, which only matters if you move a lot of video to a computer by cable. For most people that’s a fine trade for ₹65,000 less than the iPhone 18 Pro. Our iPhone 17 vs iPhone 18 Pro comparison has every difference.
Is the iPhone 17e good enough?
Only at a real discount. At Apple’s ₹79,900 it’s ₹20,000 less than the iPhone 17 and gives up the 120Hz screen, the ultrawide camera and four hours of claimed battery life. When a store drops it well below that (one had it at ₹64,900 on 12 October), it becomes the cheapest way into a 256GB iPhone with a current chip.
My rule: if you can get the iPhone 17 for ₹15,000 or less over the iPhone 17e, buy the iPhone 17. During this sale season the gap has swung from ₹90 at one store to ₹35,000 at another, so check on the day you buy. The iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17e comparison lays out the rest.
Is the iPhone 16 still worth buying?
Not from Apple, at ₹89,900. Both big stores I checked sell it for ₹69,900, and at that price it’s a reasonable buy if 128GB is enough for you. You get two cameras, including an ultrawide that the iPhone 17e doesn’t have, and Apple’s Camera Control button.
The catches: it’s the oldest chip in the line-up (the A18), it has the shortest battery claim at 22 hours, and 128GB fills up fast. If storage worries you, our breakdown of what double the storage costs explains why Apple’s ₹25,000 jump makes the starting size matter so much. Against a discounted iPhone 17e it’s a straight swap: the iPhone 16 gives you the second camera, the iPhone 17e gives you twice the storage and a newer chip. The iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17e comparison puts them side by side.
Should you buy a discounted iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone 18 Pro?
The discounted iPhone 17 Pro, for most people who want a Pro camera. Apple no longer sells it, but on 12 October stores listed the 256GB at ₹1,25,990 to ₹1,30,490, down from ₹1,34,900. That’s ₹34,410 to ₹38,910 less than the iPhone 18 Pro, for the same 6.3-inch screen and the same three 48MP cameras with 4x zoom.
Here’s what the extra money buys on the iPhone 18 Pro, from Apple’s own comparison:
- A main camera with a variable aperture (f/1.48 to f/4.0), which lets in more light at night and gives you real depth-of-field control.
- Better low-light video, by Apple’s account. No independent test has been published yet.
- The A20 Pro chip, a year newer than the 17 Pro’s A19 Pro.
- Three more hours of claimed battery life: 34 hours of video playback against 31.
That’s a good list, but not a ₹35,000 list for most people. Pay for the iPhone 18 Pro if you shoot a lot of video after dark or keep a phone five years or more. Otherwise grab the iPhone 17 Pro while stores still have it. Buy only from an authorised Apple reseller with a GST invoice, so the warranty is honoured, and expect colours and storage sizes to sell out first. Thinking of buying it in Dubai or the US instead? Here is what you really save after customs duty.

Who should buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
People who want the biggest screen and the longest battery life an iPhone has. The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs ₹15,000 more than the iPhone 18 Pro for the same cameras and chip, a 6.9-inch screen, and Apple’s longest claim at 43 hours of video playback, against 34. The price is weight: 249 grams, 38 more than the 18 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison has the full list.
Is the iPhone Air worth it?
Only if thin is the whole point. The iPhone Air is 5.64mm thick and weighs 165 grams, and it really is a different feeling in the hand. But at ₹1,49,900 it costs ₹50,000 more than the iPhone 17 and has one rear camera instead of two, a shorter battery claim (27 hours against 30) and no physical SIM slot, only eSIM. The store I checked had it at full price too. Our iPhone 17 vs iPhone Air comparison spells out what you give up.
Should you wait for the iPhone Duo?
Wait for the reviews, not just the sale date. Apple’s first foldable goes on sale in India on 23 October at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB, with a 7.6-inch folding screen inside and a 5.4-inch screen outside. It’s eSIM-only, unlocks with Touch ID instead of Face ID, and no independent review has been published yet. Spending three lakh on a first-generation fold is a bet. Let someone else find out how the hinge holds up. Weighing it against Samsung? We put the iPhone Duo against the Galaxy Z Fold8.

Should you buy from Apple or from a store?
Check the stores first. On 12 October, both big electronics stores I checked sold the iPhone 16 for ₹20,000 under Apple’s price, and one had the iPhone 17 for ₹19,910 less. Prices moved between stores day to day, so compare on the day you buy. Stick to authorised Apple resellers and keep the GST invoice for the warranty.
Timing matters too. Last year, Google searches in India for iPhone price drops peaked on 11 and 12 October, about a week before Diwali. This year Diwali falls on 8 November, so expect the next rush around the end of October. I’ll keep the store prices in this guide updated through Diwali.
Quick answers
Which iPhone has the best battery life?
The iPhone 18 Pro Max, with Apple claiming 43 hours of video playback. Among the cheaper models, the iPhone 17 leads with 30 hours. The iPhone 16 has the shortest claim in the line-up, at 22 hours.
How much is the iPhone 18 Pro 512GB in India?
₹1,89,900 on Apple’s India store, ₹25,000 more than the 256GB. Apple charges the same ₹25,000 for that step on every iPhone, which is why the 256GB is the version to buy for most people.
Which iPhones don’t take a physical SIM card?
The iPhone Air and the iPhone Duo work with eSIM only. Every other iPhone Apple sells in India takes a physical nano-SIM and an eSIM. All the big Indian carriers support eSIM, but switching takes a few minutes with your carrier, so do it before you need the phone.
