The Galaxy M17 5G costs ₹22,999, the F17 5G ₹26,499 and the A17 5G ₹27,999 for the same hardware. Here is what Samsung's A, M and F letters mean.

Galaxy A, M and F are price tags more than product lines. On The Synap’s pages, the Samsung Galaxy M17 5G, Galaxy F17 5G and Galaxy A17 5G share a chip, screen, cameras and battery, yet cost ₹22,999, ₹26,499 and ₹27,999 for 6GB + 128GB (India prices on 17 October 2026). Pick the phone, not the letter.

What do the letters A, M and F actually mean?

The letters are Samsung’s own labels for its non-flagship phones, and they are not a spec. Nothing on the spec sheets we have read ties a letter to a chip, a screen or an update promise. What the letters do predict, in practice, is the price.

Our Samsung page lists 30 phones on sale in India: nine A series, four M and four F, plus the Galaxy S and Z ranges. The cheapest A is the Samsung Galaxy A07 at ₹13,499. The cheapest M and F are both ₹16,999, the Galaxy M08 LTE and Galaxy F08 LTE.

Are the A, M and F versions of the same phone really identical?

On paper, yes, in the cheap and mid ranges. The A17, F17 and M17 all have a 6.7-inch 90Hz Super AMOLED screen, the Exynos 1330 chip, a 50MP main camera with optical stabilisation, a 5,000 mAh battery with 25W charging, and IP54 splash resistance, all as Samsung lists them. Only the colours and the price change.

6GB + 128GB version Price in India Over the M series
Samsung Galaxy M17 5G ₹22,999 Cheapest
Samsung Galaxy F17 5G ₹26,499 ₹3,500 more
Samsung Galaxy A17 5G ₹27,999 ₹5,000 more
Prices from The Synap’s phone pages, checked 17 October 2026. Starting prices before bank and exchange offers.

The best value of the three is the Galaxy M17 5G, and the poorest is the Galaxy A17 5G at that version. Its one real argument is a 256GB option (₹36,499 with 8GB of RAM), which its cheaper twins do not offer. You can see them side by side on the Galaxy A17 5G against Galaxy M17 5G page.

The same pattern shows at the bottom of the range. The 4G-only Samsung Galaxy A08 LTE costs ₹18,499 for 4GB + 64GB. The Galaxy F08 LTE and Galaxy M08 LTE cost ₹16,999 for the same chip (Helio G99+), the same 6,000 mAh battery and the same IP64 rating. That is ₹1,500 for a letter, on a phone that cannot use 5G.

Do M and F series phones get fewer updates?

No. Every A, M and F phone we checked is promised six OS updates by Samsung, from the ₹13,499 Galaxy A07 up to the ₹62,999 Galaxy A57 5G. The cheap letters are not the short-support ones. For how that promise compares across brands, see how many years of updates your phone gets in India.

When does the letter start to matter?

Higher up, the phones really do diverge. In our catalogue the M and F phones chase battery size, and the A phones chase build quality. The Samsung Galaxy A27 5G at ₹35,999, the Galaxy M47 5G and the Galaxy F70 Pro 5G at ₹37,999 share a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, a 6.7-inch 120Hz screen and the same camera set.

Spec Galaxy A27 5G Galaxy M47 5G Galaxy F70 Pro 5G
Price (6GB + 128GB) ₹35,999 ₹37,999 ₹37,999
Battery and charging 5,000 mAh, 25W 6,000 mAh, 45W 6,000 mAh, 45W
Dust and water rating IP64 None published None published
Weight 200 g 206 g 206 g
Specs as listed by Samsung and shown on The Synap’s phone pages, checked 17 October 2026.

So ₹2,000 more buys a bigger battery and faster charging, and costs you a dust and splash rating. We reported the price rise on all three in Samsung raises Galaxy A27, M47 and F70 Pro prices by ₹2,000. The F70 Pro is the same phone as the M47 at the same price, so it only wins on colour. Compare the first two on the Galaxy A27 5G against Galaxy M47 5G page.

One more thing worth knowing: the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G is ₹36,999 on our Samsung page, the cheapest Samsung with 45W or faster charging, and only ₹1,000 above the A27.

Which letter gets you the best build?

A series, but only from about ₹46,999. The Samsung Galaxy A37 5G (₹46,999 for 8GB + 128GB) is the cheapest Samsung with an IP68 rating, which means it is dust-tight and survives a dunk in water. The Galaxy A57 5G (₹62,999 for 8GB + 256GB) adds eSIM and Wi-Fi 6E. The M and F phones we checked top out at IP64 or unrated.

Budget Pick Why
Up to about ₹23,000 Galaxy M17 5G (₹22,999) Same hardware as the A17, ₹5,000 less
About ₹36,000 Galaxy A27 5G (₹35,999) IP64 and the lowest price of the trio
About ₹38,000, battery first Galaxy M47 5G (₹37,999) 6,000 mAh and 45W, no published IP rating
About ₹47,000 and up Galaxy A37 5G (₹46,999) IP68, the cheapest Samsung with it
