Snapdragon, Dimensity, Exynos, Tensor: what the chip names mean

Chip names say who made the processor, not how good the phone is. Dimensity runs from ₹31,999 and Snapdragon from ₹44,999 in India, so check the tier first.

A phone’s chip name tells you who made it and roughly which tier it sits in, not how good the phone is. Snapdragon is Qualcomm, Dimensity is MediaTek, Exynos is Samsung and Tensor is Google. Prices on The Synap on 30 October 2026 run from ₹31,999 to ₹1,54,999, and every brand shows up at several price points.

What do the four chip names actually mean?

Each name is a brand for a family of chips, and the chip is what runs the phone: apps, games, the camera processing and the AI features. Four companies sell the names you will meet on Indian phones, plus Apple, which makes its own and uses them only in iPhones.

  • Snapdragon is made by Qualcomm. It appears in phones from many makers, from budget to the most expensive Android flagships.
  • Dimensity is made by MediaTek. It is common from the ₹30,000 mark upwards, and in some flagships too.
  • Exynos is made by Samsung for its own Galaxy phones, in some models and some markets.
  • Tensor is designed by Google for its own Pixel phones.
  • A-series chips (A19 and so on) are Apple’s, found only in iPhones and iPads.

How do you read a chip number like Snapdragon 8s Gen 4?

Inside one family, a higher leading number means a higher tier, and a newer generation means a newer chip. A Snapdragon 8 or Dimensity 9000-series chip is a flagship part; 7-series chips are mid-range. Letters after the number, such as the “s” in Snapdragon 8s, mark a variant of that tier, so read the maker’s spec page before assuming.

The catch: the number only compares chips within one family. A Dimensity 8400 and a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 are not ranked by their digits, and “Gen 5” on one brand says nothing about another. No independent benchmark is used here, so this article does not rank brands by speed.

What does each chip cost in a real phone in India?

The chip name alone does not set the price. These are today’s prices for the cheapest version of each phone on The Synap, checked on 30 October 2026.

Phone Chip Today’s price (cheapest version)
Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G MediaTek Dimensity 7400-Ultra ₹31,999
vivo T5 5G Dimensity 7500 Turbo ₹34,999
OnePlus Nord 6 Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 ₹44,999
OnePlus 15 Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 ₹84,999
Pixel 11 Tensor G6 ₹89,999
iPhone 17 Apple A19 ₹99,900
Galaxy S26 Exynos 2600 ₹1,02,999
OPPO Find X10 Dimensity 9600M ₹1,39,999
Galaxy S26 Ultra Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy ₹1,54,999
Chip names and prices from The Synap phone pages, 30 October 2026. Prices are for the lowest-priced version of each phone.

Dimensity runs from ₹31,999 on the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G to ₹1,39,999 on the OPPO Find X10. Snapdragon runs from ₹44,999 on the OnePlus Nord 6 to ₹1,54,999. The brand tells you almost nothing about the bill; the tier does.

Is Snapdragon better than Dimensity?

Not as a blanket rule. Qualcomm is the more common choice in Android flagships, but MediaTek puts its top Dimensity chips in expensive phones too, and its mid-range chips fill many phones under ₹35,000. Compare the specific chip and what the phone does with it: cooling, battery and software matter as much.

A fair buying rule: within a budget, pick the phone with the better screen, battery and update promise, then check that its chip is in the right tier. On a budget of ₹30,000 to ₹35,000, a Dimensity 7-series phone like the vivo T5 5G (₹34,999 today) is a normal, sensible choice. For more at that price, see the best phones under ₹30,000.

Why does the same phone have different chips in different countries?

Makers sometimes use one chip family in one region and another elsewhere. In India, the Galaxy S26 runs Exynos 2600 while the Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. The price gap between them is ₹52,000 on The Synap, and it comes mostly from the Ultra’s bigger screen, battery and camera hardware, not from the chip brand. The full story is in our earlier explainer, Galaxy S26 Exynos or Snapdragon in India: does it matter?

For a sense of how little the name alone decides: the OnePlus 15 uses Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at ₹84,999, ₹18,000 less than the Exynos 2600 Galaxy S26 at ₹1,02,999. Screens, cameras, batteries and software differ between them, so this is a price fact, not a verdict on either chip.

What makes Tensor and Apple chips different?

Tensor and Apple’s chips are built for one maker’s software. Google designs Tensor G6 for the Pixel 11 (₹89,999 today) with its own AI features in mind, and Apple designs the A19 in the iPhone 17 (₹99,900 today) alongside iOS. You cannot buy either chip in another brand’s phone, so the comparison is always about the whole phone.

Quick answers

Which chip brand is best for gaming?

No single brand wins on its own. Look at the tier (Snapdragon 8 series, Dimensity 9000 series and similar), then at independent gaming tests for that exact phone, because cooling and software change results. Maker claims about frame rates are claims, not measurements.

Does a higher chip number always mean a faster phone?

Only within the same family and generation. Compare Snapdragon with Snapdragon, or Dimensity with Dimensity. Across brands, the number is a label, not a score.

Should chip brand decide what phone I buy?

No. Choose by budget, battery, screen, camera and how many years of updates are promised, then check that the chip is in the right tier for how you use the phone. The brand is the last tiebreaker.
